What are the goals of recognition?

·         To provide quality education for people with diabetes based on national standards

 

Why should we apply for recognition?

·         Identifies quality diabetes self-management education services that meet the National Standards for Diabetes Self-Management Education

·         Meets criteria for medicare reimbursement and allows billing for DSME visits

·         Stimulates referrals from local ADA offices

·         Enhances marketing through use of the ADA Education Recognition Logo

·         Receives free publicity on ADA website www.diabetes.org

·         Allows discounts on ADA publications and books

 

What are the requirements of ADA Recognition?

The structure, process and outcomes of the diabetes self-management education program must include:

·         One sponsoring organization that recognizes and supports quality DSME as an integral part of diabetes care

·         A qualified coordinator who oversees the planning, implementation and evaluation of the DSME program

·         An advisory system that annually plans and evaluates the services offered and reviews the participant and program outcomes

·         An instructional team that includes a registered dietitian (RD) and a registered nurse (RN) who have continuing education and experience in both diabetes and behavioral teaching

·         A written curriculum with measurable learning objectives

·         Participant education records that document individualized assessment, educational plan, intervention, evaluation and follow-up.

·         Documentation also will provide evidence of collaboration among instructional staff, providers, and referral sources

·         Tracking of participants outcomes as part of a continuous process to evaluate the effectiveness of the diabetes education experience provided and determine opportunities for improvement

 

How do we apply for recognition?

·         Once the program meets all of the above requirements, the site should begin to collect data on the operations of the diabetes education services and the patients for a 6-month period

·         Once the 6 month data collection is complete, application is made online

·         Visit http://www.diabetes.org/for-health-professionals-and-scientists/recognition/edrecognition.jsp complete the online application and submit the fee and any supporting documentation requested by random audit

 

What is the program application fee?

·         $1,100 for the initial site and $100 for each additional site from the same organization

 

How do we maintain ADA Recognition status?

·         The documentation supporting the application must be kept accurate and up to date and available for an audit anytime during the three years of recognition

·         Annual Status report must be completed and returned to the national office

 

How often do we have to renew our recognition?

·         Every 3 years with a 6 month data collection period prior to application submission

 

What do we get reimbursed for if we are ADA recognized?

·         Mass law mandates coverage for DSME, each payer has different reimbursement coverage

·         DSME is medicare reimbursable

·         DSME specific codes
